Party Affiliation FAQs

The deadline for voters who currently belong to a political party to join a different party is April 1, 2026.

Voters who don't currently belong a political party have until June 12, 2026 to join a party and receive a by-mail ballot. Any voter that joins a party prior to April 1, 2026 and would subsequently like to change parties will not have their party status changed until after the June 23 primary election.

If you don't currently belong to a political party, you are not required to join. You may vote in open primary elections if you are not a member of a party by requesting a ballot from our office.

Some political parties choose to limit who votes in their primary elections to members of the party. Only party members are allowed to vote in closed party elections. Any voter, regardless of party membership, is allowed to vote in open party elections. A list of parties by status is below.
